Sisters In The Brotherhood

In October 1935, Margaret Ellings became the first woman initiated into the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. Today, our ranks include nearly 20,000 female members who can be found anywhere the UBC works—on construction sites, power plants, and factory floors.

Many take part in the grassroots “Sisters in the Brotherhood” groups that have been launched or expanded throughout the union since 2002. Their mission: Strengthen the UBC by promoting activism and diversity and increasing the number of women members.

In addition, “Sisters in the Brotherhood” conferences have drawn hundreds of participants to three-day events designed to develop leadership skills and promote the opportunities available to UBC women.

Our commitment to increasing the ranks of Sisters in the Brotherhood has never been stronger, and there has never been a better time for women to consider joining.
