Just like on the jobsite, where contractors try to maximize the use of their material and workforce to increase productivity, the UBC has implemented more changes at the General Office in order to put more resources into organizing. The latest change we have made is the implementation of the Ultra Computer System and the corresponding abolishment of the Affiliate Services Department. The resources used to fund that department can now be used out in the field on organizing. What this union needs now and in the future are organizers out on jobsites recruiting members. If that means we must stretch our resources here at the General Office, then that's what we will do in order to organize carpenters. But don't think that this will restrict the services that we previously provided our affiliates. Other staff have been assigned to assist affiliates with any problems. We've dedicated ourselves and this union to pushing forward. That means using the latest computer technologies like the Ultra System to stay ahead of the curve, allowing us to maximize our staff and our resources. It also means that our affiliates must work with the International and give us input on how to serve our membership better and faster. That means making changes that work for our locals, councils, the General Office, and most importantly, our membership. As a Brotherhood we must change our thinking from "how things have always been done" to "how can we do things better and more efficiently." To think that way, however, we must all be believers in the fight to retake our industry by organizing carpenters. These changes at the General Office are only a small part of the organizing puzzle. But they're changes worth making if they help organize more carpenters. Because if we can do that, we're serving the membership well.
