Floor Coverers

Floor coverers install a wide variety of flooring materials, including carpet, resilients, wood, laminates, and sport surfaces. They are experts at estimating materials; understanding pattern layout; and safely and properly using the industry's many tools, adhesives, and fastening systems. Professional floor coverers from the UBC are found in commercial, residential, and institutional settings. Work is often done based on specifications of architects, facility managers or interior designers.

Quality Work via Quality Training

UBC floor covering professionals receive both classroom and hands-on training at state-of-the-art training centers around the country. Initial training for apprentices and skill-enhancement courses for journeymen are taught by industry veterans or industry and manufacturer technical experts. Subjects range from basic skills to new technologies, tools, and/or installation methods. This comprehensive training translates into unmatched productivity by UBC members for their employers.

Safety, a top priority for every flooring contractor and crew, is a constant element of training. Topics include Occupational Safety and Health Administration certifications, personal and tenant protection, containing contaminants, material handling, and more.

Flooring Industry Leaders Team with UBC to Raise Installer Certification Standards

An International Labor-Management Committee for the Floor Covering Industry, which is supported by the UBC, steers the International Standards & Training Alliance (INSTALL), which is a marketing project for the UBC’s flooring program.

INSTALL has established itself within the floorcovering industry as possessing the most comprehensive and challenging training program in North America. The curriculum is based on the UBC’s International Training Fund, but what sets it apart from other flooring curricula is the input from INSTALL partners.

Constant counsel and advice is available from technical and education experts from major mills and manufacturers throughout North America, who are formal endorsers of the INSTALL program. These companies represent the largest names in the industry, including Armstrong, Mannington, Mohawk, Pergo, and Shaw.

The goal is to make sure that what is being taught reflects current labor needs in the floorcovering industry. The content of this four-year training program includes theory and practice of proper floor preparation, installation, and finishing procedures.

INSTALL trainers work according to a professional responsibility to offer top-quality instruction to INSTALL professionals and our partner contractors.

INSTALL offers career-long programs of skill enhancement upgrades, including manufacturer specialty certifications.
